Questions
Before you start
Is Amharicly free?
Yes — you can create an account and learn free, starting with the alphabet and your first phrases. A premium plan for the full path is planned; the free tier stays a real course, not a teaser.
Does Duolingo teach Amharic?
No. Duolingo has never offered an Amharic course — which is why Amharicly exists: a structured, interactive way to learn Amharic online, with the script and audio treated as first-class.
Do I need to learn the Amharic alphabet first?
You can start speaking from your first lesson, but the course teaches the Fidel early and gradually — a few character families at a time with audio and practice — because reading unlocks everything else. The full chart is free on our alphabet page.
Is Amharic hard to learn?
It takes real effort for English speakers — the script is new and some sounds are too — but it is very learnable: the writing system is regular, spelling is nearly phonetic, and each character family follows the same seven-order pattern. Structure is what makes the difference, and that is what this course is.
